Letters of Charles Grant, Vicomte de Vaux, 1796-1809.

A small archive of original and drafts of letters of Charles Grant Vaux, the bulk of which is comprised of twenty two drafts of letters in French and in English dated April 14 to Sptember 17, 1809, addressed to various dignitaries, soliciting support for the publishing of the second edition of his book THE MEANS OF FINDING THE LONGITUDE AT SEA LEVEL. To be found are drafts of five letters regarding family matters dated 1796 to 1797, one letter from a Montfleury dated March 29, 1796, and two receipts for payments by Grant dated January 7 and April 4, 1796. The items are enclosed in a paper wrapper which is inscribed in pencil "Mes affaires de France et de Hambourg, no. 8."

Charles Grant, vicomte de Vaux, was the descendant of a family of nobles who had emigrated from Scotland to France in the 14th century. Vaux was born in 1749 on the island of Mauritius, where his father, Louis-Charles Grant, the Baron de Vaux, served as governor. As a youth, Vaux sailed to France to be educated and settled at Vaux-sur-Seulle in Normandy, and eventually became an army officer.
